Tornado radios support Mirrored Bits for Teleprotection

A low-cost, innovative relay-to-relay communications technology, Mirrored Bits developed by Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories provides the opportunity to support applications such as protection and control without the need to deploy more expensive external communications equipment.

Ubiik Mimomax Tornado and Tornado X radios can support SEL Mirrored Bits via the two asynchronous serial (RS232) ports on the radio across a point-to-point link. These serial ports can be configured to transport serial data from end-to-end (including mirrored bits) across the air.

The benefits of using Mirrored Bits technology are:

  • Speed – exchanges up to 8 bits of status information at ultra-low latency.
  • Resilience – continuous monitoring of the channel for communication errors
  • Security – Multiple Security Measures ensure the 8 Mirrored Bits logic status elements are transmitted correctly between relays.
  • Low-cost – removes requirement to deploy the external communication equipment and wiring used in conventional protection and control schemes.
